Fasting as a means to lose kilos has always been a controversial topic, and it is not for less as there are opinions for and against. The lack of food intake throughout the day, results in changes in the organism. During fasting the body is deprived of incorporating foods whose nutrients are used for every cell, tissue and organ to function properly. During fasting are launched a series of adaptive mechanisms that allow each organ works, saving energy. This can be dangerous to health.
When the body does not get the needed nutrients for its operation, it lowers its metabolism, saving energy for the brain and heart function. It is important to have in mind that the brain is glucose dependent. Therefore, if there is little glucose circulating in the blood can cause fainting. This also brings feeling of listlessness, tiredness and fatigue because the glucose circulating in the blood should be used to maintain vital functions.
Also, many people who perform fasting for several hours (especially didn’t have breakfast and no lunch) do not fall below the expected weight or directly the balance does not move. This is because the body adapts to the shortage of food, by reducing the metabolism to a minimum. Thus when the body receives food, rather than increase metabolism, remains low. Why?, Because that energy accumulates for times of food scarcity. This process is called adaptive hyperphagia.
Finally, another of the great dangers of the fasts is incitement to anorexia. The limit is very thin and very subtle. Unfortunately people who suffer from anorexia implement tips or tricks to make a strict fast. These practices, may lead to death.
Fasting is useful for medical purposes and sometimes necessary, but it is controlled. Fasting based on religion and cultures are very personal matters, but the fast (all variants) as a means to lose weight can be dangerous.
So if you’re considering making a diet that includes fasting, do not be swayed by certain promises, consult your physician. Your life is worth more than a few extra kilos.
